Nikon D80 was stolen, what should I buy to replace?

Post by WilliamLucas »

My old Nikon D80 with a 18-55 kit lens and Tamron 70-300 lens were stolen while on vacation so I am not locked in to any camera system by a lens collection. The D80 was a great camera but I'm sure is dwarfed by current DSLRs of today.

I am primarily looking at the sub $1k range for a replacement, possibly a d5600 or similar spec Canon. I'm also curious about mirrorless cameras like the Sony a6000. DPreview seems to like the 5600 a lot, but it also sounds like Canon's dual pixel autofocus wins out during video.

I would put a priority on video capabilities as I've got a 1st kid on the way and anticipate filming sports and other activities through a zoom. Otherwise I used my D80 while hiking and some macro shooting.
