I noticed that Nikon's snapbridge app got an update on my Android phone a couple of days ago. Now it contains options for setting up "direct wifi" connection, which (according to the instructions) seems to be a way to get a wifi connection going with newer Nikon cameras without first having to connect via bluetooth. Nikon's own documentation implies that a firmware update is required for cameras (except for the new Nikon Z line), and no such update is yet available.

Could this mean that using qdsldashboard on phones will get easier for Nikon gear in the near future?
