I am using the camera's button to trigger the shots, but it definitely doesn't let me take any further shots while its downloading to the computer.

Hi, I might be missing something. When the photos are transferring I can't take any more shots until its fully uploaded. (unless you shoot in very quick succession) -in which case thats fine until after a second or two after pausing your shooting, the camera displays PC mode and starts transferring....
