Tutorial: How to connect via WiFi with 2 smartphones (replacing Tp-Link or wu-1a)

Post by dr.csoo »

Hello, I want to share here what I have found recently. I bought the wu-1a in order to connect via WiFi my smartphone and make Timelapses, but it worked like shit, once I walk 2 or 3 steps out it get disconnect, or just because sometimes, and I got it back to the store, so I was thinking about to buy the MR-3040. But in Spain it cost 100 €, no way.
So I found a guy who managed to connect a smartphone wired and then with thetering the WiFi to another smartphone he could use qdslrdashboard perfectly, but he didn't made a proper tutorial. Anyway he made me happy so I want to make you happy.

What you need:
Nikon camera (may work with others, but I didn't test it)
USB Cable from the camera...
USB On the Go adapter
Two Smartphones with Android (may work with iPhone, I will never know, I hate iPhones)

So:
1- turn on the wireless conecction of the camera in the menu (maybe you don't need to, but I did)
2- connect the first smartphone (I suggest the older and smaller one) via cable to the camera, here is where you need the On the Go adapter, and open the qDslrdashboard.
3- Once you have connected as usual just click where it say "camera mode" and you will see "host mode" in red.

4- With this phone turn on the shared WiFi. Up to you if you want security or not.
5- Connect the 2nd smartphone (or tablet, or PC, or whatever you use for qDslrdashboard) to that WiFi.
6- open qDslrdashboard and with a long pushing in the network button (not USB nor WiFi Nikon, canon, sony...the 2nd from the left). It will open a dialog, you have to introduce the IP from the first phone connection, find your IP and put it there,in my case 192.168.43.1, always ending in 1, cause is the addres of the server. you cannot change the port and you don't need to.

7- Enjoy

If something doesn't work just force to close the app, delete cache and data and try again. In both devices.
This is my first tutorial ever, so sorry for my English.
It worked for me with a d7100, old moto G 1st gen, and Zenfone 2 (both rooted but you don't need it)

Thanks for reading.
