qDslrDashboard + El Cap + D810 : Cable works, wifi doesn't.

Post by markh »

Hi there,

I have a similar problem to qbrena, in that I can get qDslrDashboard to work via USB cable, but not via wifi and MR3040.

My configurations are :

MacAir and iMac running latest El Capitan (10.11.3 (15D21)), Wifi only, no ethernet connection.
Nikon D810 and D700, various USB cables, including Nikon originals. Camera plugged into the full-sized USB on the MR3040.

I have installed OpenWrt on MR3040 and can see ddserver running
Version is : "OpenWrt Attitude Adjustment 12.09.1 / LuCI 0.11 Branch (0.11+svn9951)"
I have tried flashing update and reflashing full version.

The log file on MR3040 sees USB connection when camera connected, but doesn’t explicitly say it sees a Nikon D810.
However, the LED configuration page does show that a Nikon D810 is attached, and triggers LED #4, so the camera is recognised.
I have logging set to "info" to get as much information as possible.
I make sure the camera is on and awake and I have tried various permutations of connection and start-up order.

When I run qDslrDashboard, I get an empty black screen with the menu items along the top. Clicking on the Nikon-wifi symbol has no visible effect on the interface. If I click and hold I see the parameters, and they look good. However the MR3040 does respond to qDslrDashboard running, in that its wifi light flashes, and the log file shows a conversation with the computer. But only one conversation, however many times I start qDslrDashboard and click on the Nikon-wifi button.

So it seems that all the important connections are working, but not all together. I feel that I am one step away from having your brilliant project running, which will be rewarded with a donation if I succeed.

Any advice on the next step for testing or diagnostics ?

Thanks in advance,

Mark Harris

For the MR3040 (the ddserver connection) you need to use the 'Network' button (second from left on OSX).
The 'Nikon wireless' button is only used with Nikon DSLR that have built in wireless and the ones that use the WU-1a/1b adapter.

OK, that was good to know, but the problem is still there.
How can I get more information on where the problem is ?

When I click on the network button, the qDslrDashboard inferace doesn't show any change, but I see this arrive in the OpenWrt log file :

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Which sounds good - the MacAir is clearly talking to the MR3040.
And the MR3040 knows there is a D700 attached, because the LED status page aknowledges it.
I attach the overall status screenshot too.

Any ideas for the next step ?

Thanks,

Mark

Connect your DSLR and turn it on (full size USB port on the MR3040).
Connect your MAC to the MR3040 and in your browser navigate to 192.168.1.1
Then check the Status->System log page
You should have something like this there:

Code: Select all

Mar 13 16:17:43 Arduino kern.info kernel: [2091180.000000] usb 1-1.1.4: new high-speed USB device number 63 using ehci-platform
Mar 13 16:17:43 Arduino kern.info kernel: [2091180.130000] usb 1-1.1.4: New USB device found, idVendor=04b0, idProduct=0430
Mar 13 16:17:43 Arduino kern.info kernel: [2091180.130000] usb 1-1.1.4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
Mar 13 16:17:43 Arduino kern.info kernel: [2091180.130000] usb 1-1.1.4: Product: NIKON DSC D7100
Mar 13 16:17:43 Arduino kern.info kernel: [2091180.140000] usb 1-1.1.4: Manufacturer: NIKON
Do you have it?

No, I don't see that. I just get two lines, no mention of the camera type. I have tried two cameras and 3 cables.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sep 8 15:48:28 OpenWrt kern.info kernel: [ 276.070000] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, device number 2

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But curiously if I look at the LED configuration page (heh, I'm desperate...), there the camera model shows up correctly, so it has connected in some way.

I'm pretty sure I have the right firmware, but can you confirm ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Router Name OpenWrt
Router Model TP-Link TL-MR3040 v2
Firmware Version OpenWrt Attitude Adjustment 12.09.1 / LuCI 0.11 Branch (0.11+svn9951)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for your patience,

The firmware is ok, seams it does not recognize the camera.
Can you try another USB cable? Do you use the MR3040 full size USB port?

Hi,
I do use the big USB port, and I have tried 2 cameras and 6 USB cables.
I actually have a CamRanger that all the hardware works fine on, but I actually prefer qDslrDashboard from what I've seen when USB tethered.

And I'm really confused by it not working, as when I look at the 'system led configuration' page in OpenWrt, it names the camera correctly,
so it is identifying the camera at some level.

But I guess we've hit the end of the road for debugging, so thanks for your help.
Perhaps I'll try it on an Arduino Yun sometime.

I have had no issue with using a 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro running El Capitan.

Using a Nikon D5300, set the WiFi to Enable, on the WiFi icon at the top of the rMBP screen, select the Nikon Nikon_WU2_0090B5125F6D network, wait for the WiFi icon to go solid on the rMBP, start qDSLRdashboard, I double click on the Nikon WiFi icon in the opening screen of the qDSLR and I am connected.

Set the camera to LiveMode from the qDSLR screen, set Autofocus from the screen (then manually switch to manual focus on the camera), set qDSLR to Host Mode (since I no longer need to touch the camera), set the interval timer, go to LRTimelapse, make all adjustments and settings, start the timer from qDSLR, back to LRtimelapse to start Auto Holy Grail (I skipped a few steps but you get the picture).

I have never tried the USB connection, don't want to, don't need to with the D5300.

Sounds great Rocky, and everyone else seems to have a great experience with qDSLR, but since I have a D700 and a D810, I don't have inbuilt WiFi,
which is why I hacked an MR3040 to become a WiFi-dongle. But I'm missing something. Frustrating that it's so close to working.

markh,

Just spitballing here trying to offer any suggestions...off the wall or otherwise...

Are you using any sort of internal or external intervalometer...and if so is it active on either of the cameras? With the lowly D5300, if WiFi is active it locks me out from using the intervalometer...not sure if such a setting being made internally or externally on your cameras would cause any blocking of the WiFi connection.

I have experienced some delayed response times from qDSLR when tapping the WiFi icon (I know in your case you need to tap the network icon). In my frustration I just kept tapping the icon again and again and it finally woke up...just spitballing, OK.
