TP-Link 3040 Ver 2.5 - Not working

Post by Vilhelm »

I received my 3040 yesterday. Checked the HW version on the back to see it is ver 2.5. Haven't seen a lot of reference to that particular model online. Proceeded to load up the v2 OpenWRT firmware. The device accepted it no problem. Under the setting>software tab it indicates it is running DDSERVER 2.13. iphone and MacBook are able to connect to the DDServer network. I've connected my 5D (MKII & MKIII) to the 3040. Neither the OSX or IOS app is able to detect or pickup the camera. I've tried every possible combination of camera, cable, device, and order in which everything is connected or powered on. Is there a specific or alternate firmware I should be trying on this particular hardware version? The app opens no problem, but it's just a black screen with all the icons. I've tried the long press on the network button as well with no success.

For the MR3040 you need to use the 'Network' button (on iOS first button from left, on OSX second)
Did you try to long press the 'Network' button and in the upcoming IP dialog enter 192.168.1.1 and press the 'Ok' button? Does that connect?

The long press method does not connect.

I tried on my old 40D, and everything seems to work as expected. There's something in this setup that is not working with the 5D MKII or the 5D MKIII. They both work with the software on the MacBook when directly connected via USB though.

You need to connect it to the MR3040 full USB port, but if you get 40D working I guess you used it already.
If your 40D is working then the 5D Mk 2 and 3 will to, as same code is used.
Eventually try another USB cable, maybe a shorter one.

You can check the MR3040 system log, like this:
- turn on the MR3040 and wait till the wireless led is on
- connect your controlling device wireless to the MR3040 wireless
- connect your DSLR with USB cable to the MR3040 and turn it on
- open a web browser on your controlling device and navigate to http://192.168.1.1
- navigate to the Status->System log (scroll to the end)
- you should have something like this at the end:

Code: Select all

I've tried about 10 different USB cables. Like I said, it seems to work fine straight USB to the Mac, so I can't imagine it has anything to do with my cables or ports (especially on 2 seperate 5D's). Are there specific camera settings I should be looking at? There doesn't seem to be anything in the documentation on setup on the camera side.

No need for any special camera settings.
You can try to flash the sysupgrade image again.
You can follow the upgrade instructions: http://dslrdashboard.info/tp-link-mr304 ... e-upgrade/

hi Vilhelm

This is very confusing. I have the same problem. It seems like this is a complex problem with several factors involved. I don't think it's related to ddserver. I also have problem with the same router and canon 550/t2i. My nikon cameras work just fine. My canon shows message busy when I connect to usb port of router and camera freezes. If you search the dslrdashboard forum you only find diffuse answers like: have you tried another cable? Is your cable broken? Have you tried restart? Have you tried upgrading? Clearly answers from people who have not experienced the problem.

Check the status->system log or ssh to router and do:
logread -f
while you plug in/unplug.

The most confusing part is that from time to time it works. I still have not found a safe method to make it work but this helps:
- insert a passive usb2.0 hub between the router and camera
- use long cable (mine is about 3m long).
- when restarting the router, do a hard reboot by turning power off/on.

I found some hints in openwrt forums. Several people are reporting this kind of errors:
[ 3537.660000] usb 1-1: device not accepting address 5, error -71
[ 3537.660000] usb usb1-port1: unable to enumerate USB device

Several people have reported problems with connecting usb-sticks or usb-harddrives. However the devices are working fine with original firmware, so it must be related to linux distribution. This problem has been ongoing for several years. It looks to me like there is some bad combination of router hardware and canon usb chips. Maybe it's possible to tweek Linux distribution somehow? Looks like some kind of timing problem, since (in my case this moment) it's working fine with long usb cable.

I'm suprised that there is no more noise about this problem. Canon is very popular brand. Maybe there are several versions of the router hw and the problem is fixed in later versions?
