qDSLR Dashboard overriding external intervalometer

This is an ongoing problem for me that I've had on multiple cameras and can't figure it out. I am trying to use an external intervalometer with qDSLR Dashboard (not qDSLR Dashboard's intervalometer). The problem I am frequently having is that qDSLR Dashboard when plugged in, takes over all control of the camera and shuts off any intervalometer working on the camera. To make it more complicated, sometimes it doesn't. But I need to find a reliable way of getting an external intervalometer and qDSLR Dashboard to work together. Anyone else had this problem?
