D800 WU-1a/1b and TPLink MR3040

Post by Mighty Malc »

I am a potential new user interested in using dslrdashboard wirelessly with a Nikon D800 from about 24 feet up a mast.
The MR3040 seems to be the recommended solution, but is hard to obtain in the UK or a silly price.
Can I use the Nikon WU-1a or 1b with the D800 instead (and which is it)?

I get the impression from internet reading that the Nikon WU-1a needs hacking to work with the D800 and is not officially supported.
Is it a case that it works with dslrdashboard on the D800 but provides limited functionality (e.g. no video)? Or does it just not work?

Having a separate battery for WiFi in the MR3040 appeals, to avoid draining the camera battery via a WU-1a (1b).
But up a mast there is the penalty of having to attach the MR3040 securely somewhere, whereas the WU-1a is already attached to the D800.
And in the UK the WU-1a/1b are a lot cheaper.

If the WU-1a/1b does not work on the D800, then with the MR3040 being unobtainable/too expensive, I need an alternative.
The site mentions using a MR3020 instead, except I am not confident of flashing it (no video tutorial unlike the MR3040).
And I need to get battery power (up the mast) to the MR3020 somehow.
Is the MR3020 the next best choice, bearing in mind the lack of battery and that I need good instructions on how to set it up.

Thanks.
