TP-Link TL-MR3040 Firmware mods vs original

Post by xma1e »

Hi

Sorry if this has already been asked. What is the difference between the modified firmware for the TP-Link TL-MR3040 and the official OEM one?

Is there anything preventing me from using a different wireless router?

The reason I ask, is because there will come a time when it will be impossible to buy a TP-Link TL-MR3040.

Thanks

The original TP-Link firmware can't be modified.
The OpenWrt ( https://openwrt.org ) is described as a Linux distribution for embedded devices.
It can be extended, in this case with the small application called ddserver (DslrDashboardServer - https://github.com/hubaiz/DslrDashboardServer ) that acts as a proxy server for PTP packets.

Thanks.

Is this the same as used in DSLR Controller (Android)?

Is it possible to reset a MR3040 back to it's original firmware?

I am considering using the smaller HAME MPR-A2 router so will want to re-allocate the TP router for something else.

It is but not so light, here it is described: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-mr3040
Scroll down to 'Restoring original firmware'

The Hame A2 is not so smaller then the MR3040.
It has same length as the MR3040, it is thicker and a narrower then the MR3040.

Thanks. My main concern is the rising price of the MR3040 in my area as the product becomes harder to source. I can buy the Hame A2 for half the price, so will get two, one for use and one as an emergency backup.

Is there anywhere the process is documented in a step by step form?

On Openwrt it is not very clear at all.

It is the only explanation I found and as I wrote it is not so easy.
