Troubleshooting USB connection issue

Hi all,
I'm new to qDslrDashboard and tried it out today.
I tried tethering with USB and clicking the USB connect icon in qDslrDashboard, but despite several attempts, the only thing that happens is it says "searching" and then nothing happens, just black screen.
I checked that the tethering connection works and it does (it works fine with Lightroom).
I'm using a Nikon D7100 camera with USB connection rnning on a Macbook Pro with macOS Sierra (version 10.12.6).
Can anyone help me out? Thanks!
