What do I need to control Nikon D7100

Post by mliu4 »

I'm a complete newbie in qDD but am planning to wirelessly remotely control my Nikon D7100 on either an iPhone 5/6 or a Android phone (Andoid 4.1). What would I need in addition to the Nikon WU-1a adaptor? There are many complaints about the connection being unreliable when used with Nikon's app. Not to mention Nikon's app only provide very limited functionality.

1. Will using qDD make the connection more reliable?

2. When looking at the download page on this website, I see versions for Android, Windows, Linux, but not for iOS, I saw a version for iOS on Apple's app store but it costs a few dollars, so the Android version is free but iOS version is not? Are the two versions equivalent in functions?

3. The user manual also talks about using an OpenWRT based router, do I need this if I already have the Nikon WU-1a adaptor?

I know I sound very un-knowledgeable in this area but that's why I come to you experts for help. I'd appreciate any helpful information. Thank you!

Hi Mike,

let me try to help you ;)

1. I think the problem is the small WU-1a adapter which didn't provide such a strong wlan-signal. But you should give it a try because you have everything you need to control the camera.

2. The android version is only free of charge cause Zoltans country is not supportet by google as he mentioned.

3. No you don't need a router with OpenWRT because you have the WU-1a but if the connection with the WU-1a is to unstable or you want to control the cam from a bigger distance you can use the OpenWRT router because the wlan signal is much stronger

I hope I could help you.

I am using the d7100 & WU-1a to connect to a Nexus 7 with qDD 0.29. Works very well together. If using the combination near your router or other wifi source that you normally use, you need to specifically connect the tablet by accessing the connection notification dropdown on your tablet, or through Settings for wifi. I've found that the camera connection is occasionally dropped when in proximity to the stronger wifi signal from my router. If qDD suddenly stops working, check the wifi connection. When exiting qDD, make sure that you click on the app's power off button before turning off the camera. Otherwise, I find the tablet tends to freeze and I need to power off.
