TP-Link MR3040 firmware upgrade

Note: You should follow this guide if your TP-Link MR3040 already has OpenWrt on it and you should upgrade it

Note: Be shure that your TP-Link MR3040 battery is fully charged

Note: Be shure that you download the correct ‘sysupgrade‘ image file that matches your MR3040 version (V1, V2)

To upgrade the TP-Link MR3040 OpenWrt firmware follow these steps:

  1. Download the ‘sysupgrade‘ OpenWrt image file that matches your MR3040 version (V1, V2)
  2. Connect the MR3040 to your PC/Laptop with an Ethernet cable
  3. Access the MR3040 OpenWrt web interface by opening a web browser and entering http://192.168.1.1
  4. In OpenWrt web interface menu select ‘System->Backup/Flash firmware’
  5. Under ‘Flash new firmware image’ section press the ‘chosse file’ button and select the image file that you downloaded in step
    tip: if you uncheck the ‘Keep settings’ checkbox the current OpenWrt settings will be replaced with the settings from the image file that you are flashing
  6. Press the ‘Flash Image’ button – this will uploaded the firmware file to your MR3040
  1. In the upcoming screen press the ‘Proceed’  button to start the firmware upgrade process
  2. Wait 2-3 minutes till the firmware process finishes. During the process the MR3040 LEDs will go off and the router will restart itself

If for some reason your firmware isn’t updated you can try and reset your MR3040 OpenWrt to it’s initial state and after that retry the firmware flash again.

To reset your router to it’s initial state follow these steps:

  1. Connect your MR3040 to your PC/Laptop with Ethernet cable
  2. Access the MR3040 OpenWrt web interface by opening a web browser and entering http://192.168.1.1
  3. In OpenWrt web interface menu select ‘System->Backup/Flash firmware’
  4. Under ‘Backup/Restore’ section press the ‘Perform reset’ button
  5. Confirm the reset by clicking on the ‘Ok’ button
  6. Wait 2-3 minutes. The MR3040 will reboot.
